The painter, architect and sculptor Hermann Gradl designed the BELLE EPOQUE fish service in the first year he worked for the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. Presented in 1900 at the Paris World Exhibition and awarded a "Grand Prix", it is one of the most successful examples of the floral Art Nouveau in Munich, to which its name also refers. The fish platter, saucière and potato bowl as well as the 16 plates - later expanded to a service for 18 people - all feature various naturalistic fish motifs. Then as now, the contours of the fish are printed outlines from copper plates on tissue paper, from which they are transferred to the plates and then worked out in detail. In the stylized depicted aquatic plants, the elegant shape merges with the decor that harmoniously frames the opening in the porcelain. Five colour firings are necessary to allow the artistic onglaze painting to blossom.
